Using text in design is something we have done in the past, but have really stepped up our game in recent projects. 1776 is full of text, and Teddy & The Bully Bar will contain custom text and graphics as well. Using text in design is a great (and obvious!) way to get a message across, but the letters themselves are also aesthetically pleasing. We have done some pretty funky work that we are really proud of… Take a look!

For Teddy & The Bully Bar, we have printed Theodore Roosevelt quotes on glass, and each sheet of glass is custom painted and treated to create a mysterious looking surface. Stay tuned to see how these pieces will be installed in the restaurant!

For 1776, we created a “Declaration of Innovation” wall, highlighting quotes from the Mayor of DC and the founders of 1776. By doing this, we were able to turn a plain wall into an inspiring piece of art that states the goals and principles of 1776. We were lucky enough to work with Jen Snyder and Brandon Hill (of No King’s Collective) on this part of our project!

{Applying the quotes for the Declaration of Innovation wall}

{Declaration of Innovation}

{Mayor Vince Gray and Evan Burfield, Founder of 1776}

We also have custom lazer cut letterboards by Classic Cellar Designs, seen below, that contain quotes about rebellion and innovation, that will be turned into tabletops. We painted them white and the final result will be a high gloss table… Stay tuned to see the end result!

{Table tops in progress}

{Table tops in progress}

Alex Cowan, who is a carpenter for O’Neill Studios, made this 1776 logo for the space. It will eventually be suspended from the ceiling, but here is the sign, temporarily displayed so that you can see it right when you walk in!

We love collaborating with other artsits, and we worked with Brandon Hill and Peter Chang of No King’s Collective. They created this 1940′s-1950′s newspaper inspired wall outside the main conference room at 1776.

In some of our past projects, like Lincoln, we have also used typography in design. The Emancipation wall at Lincoln is still one of our favorite installations, and has inspired us to continue pushing forward with text in our commercial work!

Stay tuned to O’Neill Studios to see our progress in 1776 and Teddy & The Bully Bar!

When designing and finishing commercial spaces, every room, hallway, nook, and cranny is important and thought about carefully. The back hallways of some of our previous commercial projects have allowed us to experiment a little bit with design techniques. Because a hallway is smaller than say the main room of a bar or restaurant, different finishes can be used in different scale. With all this in mind, we still stay true to the feeling of the space. Here is a look at the work we have created in back hallways!

First, here is an in progress shot of the trim leading up to the back hallway of Teddy. Unfinished now, but not for long!

{Trim of Teddy & The Bully Bar}

At Lincoln, we used custom graphics and treated mirrors that were custom cut to fit a 52 foot long wall in the back hallway. Using mirrors in such a large scale in a back hallway makes for a sort of optical illusion, and is certainly very visually pleasing!

{Lincoln back hallway}

At Capitale, we created a seating area and re-incorporated the black and white striped ceiling, that is also featured in the lobby when you first walk in.

{Capitale back hallway}

{Custom gold crocodile wall in back hallway of Capitale}

In Oya, we played off of the black and white theme throughout the restaurant, and created a 3D damask pattern on the upper half of the walls!

{Back hallway at Oya}

At Irish Whiskey, we treated the back hallway (and staircase) as our canvas! The walls are covered in custom stencils, all fitting in with the feeling of an Irish pub, as you walk throughout this bar and up the stairs.

Using everyday objects in art and design creates a richer, more handcrafted feeling. You never know the potential of a common object until you view it in a different scenario, and use it in a way it is not intended for.

Here are some sneak peek images from 1776, where the O’Neill Studios crew is repurposing old doors:

{Wall of doors at 1776!}

Small, common objects in bulk can also make for an awesome composition. O’Neill Studios has done work with pennies in Lincoln… we made a penny floor and custom DC Flag penny wall. But both small and large items can be repurposed to add a different soul to art and design. Here are some smaller objects that can be assembled in large quantities to make a stunning final product!

{DC Flag penny wall, Lincoln Restaurant, an O’Neill Studios project}

{Penny floor, Lincoln Restaurant, custom floor by O’Neill Studios}

{Penny walls}

{Even a penny sofa! By Johnny Swing)

Mason jars are great, versatile objects that can be used as drinking glasses, vases, and storage. But they can also be arranged into lighting fixtures! We also did a hanging jar lighting fixture at Lincoln as well.

{Hanging jar lighting installation done by O’Neill Studios at Lincoln Restaurant}

{Mason jar chandelier}

Going a bit larger, suitcases or trunks (look for them at thrift stores!) can be re-purposed into furniture. They have great potential because you can either leave the suitcase open or closed, and then design from there. Here are some really creative ideas:

{Old suitcases of different shapes and sizes, painted the same color turns two pieces into a whole}

{Vintage trunk re-purposed into a bar}

{Colorful trunk as a living room table}

{Trunk transformed into an entryway table}

{A great looking trunk under the stairs for storage}

{Vintage trunk at the foot of a bed}

{Suitcase re-purposed into a chair!}

Larger objects, such as shutters, ladders, and doors, can also be re-purposed into really functional objects and furniture.

{Shutter coat rack}

{Ladder painted purple and re-purposed as clothing rack}

Stay tuned to see how we will be using reclaimed doors in design for 1776!

Animal prints are great because each different print offers a different graphic feel, as well as a different texture. Here are two chairs we are working on for Teddy & The Bully Bar. They just arrived yesterday, and need some finishing touches, but we LOVE the texture and patterns of these faux animal skin chairs!

{Crocodile chairs for Teddy}

{Detail of lighter crocodile chair, wood needs finishing, but the nailheads are a great addition to this}

{Detail of darker crocodile chair, love the darker, rich color}

And here are some other examples of ways to use animal print for upholstery:

{Animal skin sofa at SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills}

{Ostrich leather chairs paired with zebra rug}

But you can start small with animal print by decorating with pillows, cushions, or an accent rug, so you won’t overwhelm a room with pattern.

{Zebra upholstery and nail heads at the foot of a bed}

{Zebra upholstery and rug at the foot of a bed}

{Cow hide rug paired with unexpected bright yellow}

Another interesting take on animal print decor is faux crocodile skin. O’Neill Studios did a custom, decorative crocodile wall finish in gold for Capitale, and we love the way this wall looks, especially because of the texture of the wall!

{Crocodile wall in the back room of Capitale}

{Textured crocodile stencil with high gloss black paint finish, by Roxanne Christie, paired with girly vanity in a powder room}

This look can be replicated by using crocodile tiles, which come in many colors and can give a great feeling to a room. Here are some examples of creative uses of crocodile tiles:

{Crocodile tile backsplash}

{White crocodile tile}

Rodger Schultz My name is Rodger Schultz and I love you. It is my purpose, my joy and my labor to find the most love possible and offer it directly. The artwork that comes from me is the exhaust of my Being. Now a full-time jock primarily working in pigments, I utilize all materials that may present themselves, and largely prefer to work in ways that are stylistically unknown to me. From this nomadic, exploratory nature emerges a body of work that is singularly unpredictable, uniquely diverse and visually exciting to watch unfold. Coming from the unknown, my creative processes are usually broken down to simplicity, then extended outward toward complexity. I study the Self, not the paint, and though a natural impressionist, I spend a large amount of time inspecting and merging multiple artistic genres. Even when pairing ill-advised motifs, Source, Intent and Color bind my work and it is rare that I would not employ the entire spectrum in a single piece. I tend to revel in the flawed, avoid overly excessive detail and almost never engage in work where the result is pre-known. Fulfilled, I seek not, and instead frolic unabashed in the infinite realms of Joy manifest. As an independent outsider, I am supported by an ever-growing pedigree of private collectors that recognize themselves in my work. They are my own Self and I dedicate the whole of my waking hours inventing, exploring, and creating artwork with an esteemed quality and beauty worthy of their Being. Love is all there is.

Warren Weixler Warren is the Founder and Creative Director of Design Operative, a Washington DC based creative design and fabrications firm that specializes in creating unique commercial space, furniture, and 3-dimensional products. Warren has worked on past O’Neill Studios projects and is currently working on Teddy and the Bully Bar. “I was drawn to the craft and attention to detail at a young age. Being able to take a material and apply a skill set with our hands which results in something greater is very powerful.”

At the time he was just starting out with his business he did not have the financialmeans to hire anyone to help him – So in stepped my older sister and I. Mind you, I had to stand on a stool to reach everything and we were the young ages of 6 and 9. I was most definitely not raised with a silver spoon in my mouth. But from doing hard work at such a young age I can fix most things a man can’t and can always walk into a room and recognize the potential it could have, once I get my interior design fingers on it… PHOTOGRAPHY: In addition to my appreciation for fashion I always loved to capture real life moment’s – That’s when I realized that MY camera would never leave my side. It is my true passion and my first love. It allows me to show the world through my eyes. And along with things I love, Fashion, Interior Design, & Humanitarian work. I feel I have a moral obligation to not only myself to lead a good life but to help others as well.

Jen Snyder In 1992, Jen discovered the then little-known world of faux finishing. Combining design principles gleaned while studying graphics along with her natural talent for color, she explored the boundaries of textural design. Always current on the latest interior finishes, Jen experiments with unique products from across the globe. Clients praise her impeccable standards and artistry, her attention to detail, her keen sense of visual flow, and especially her persistence in hearing the needs and concerns featured in each new design opportunity. Impressive with both brushes and trowels, Jen’s passion and flexibility make her a stand-out in this ever-changing, always challenging field. This photo is of The Hop Collection. “It is affiliated with Johns Hopkins. I created this in collaboration with N. Rasmussen. I love randomly discovering that clients, friends and strangers alike have enjoyed this collection while visiting various doctors in the building.”

Karen Suderman Karen Suderman has enjoyed being a professional artist and decorative painter since 2001. “I love the process of creating a work of art as much as helping a space achieve its full potential. It’s fun painting murals and creating unique finishes for clients with distinctive tastes — it’s a glimpse into their creativity,” she says. Suderman started a decorative finishing business and opened an art gallery in Austin, Texas before planting roots in the D.C. area. Now at home with O’Neill studios, she enjoys the collaborative atmosphere. “The combined experience and strengths within O’Neill Studios is energizing to me. As a team, we’re definitely better than the sum of our parts.” Suderman’s fine artwork belongs to private collections in Texas, New York and Alaska. Her favorite mediums are oil on canvas and acrylic fresco on marble dust panel. Karen’s abstract work has been described as “contemplative and sensuous.” “My themes include, the familiarity of rhythm, the unveiling of beauty, the connection within lines. Eternity compels me; I’m not interested in recreating something, but uncovering it.”

Ed Fahim For the last 15 years, I have been evolved in numerous glass projects with American Glass and Mirror. From cutting small glass shelves, to installing large glass panels. Glass is unique and challenging. It requires certain skills and proper help to achieve great results. My passion for glass designing is derived from the end results. I strive to in each project to make it the best it could be. Quality is a very important aspect in my work. I ensure that every piece of glass is cut and fabricated according to great standards that I have had set throughout the years. Ed has worked on past O’Neill Studios projects, such as Lincoln Restaurant, where he cut and installed custom mirrors in the back hallway, which span a wall space that is 52 feet long. He also cut the large patina mirror hanging over the main bar at Hank’s Oyster Bar. He has made new, custom-cut mirrors for Teddy and the Bully Bar, which will be arranged in a herringbone pattern.

After studying the human art form and receiving a masters degree in physiology from Howard University in Washington, DC, Roxanne decided to pursue what she truly loved. “Creativity and art is my passion. I feel that I have been blessed with a special gift and it is incredibly satisfying to know that I can use my talent to positively influence the lives of others,” says Roxanne. Her inspiration is drawn from nature, textile, and travel abroad and both her decorative work and her fine art work reflects that.

{Grey chevron variation pattern}

Stencils also make for great floor patterns. The scale of the stencil is important – think about the space you are working with to determine whether a large or small stencil would work in the room. From there, you can use bright or neutral colors!

It’s not by chance that these spaces are as cool as they are; they are each crafted to the specific needs and style of those working there, and can be constantly evolving. Here are some design elements that add fluidity and functionality to startup spaces.

{Glass walls can multiple purposes. A glass wall, for example, can be a divider as well as a surface to write on. This also promotes interaction with the space itself. Launchpad, Bangkok}

Why then, has Washington DC been somewhat left out of the startup space style of working? Washington DC is a major city with a lot of powerful connections and creative people, so it seems strange that the presence of co-work hubs is lacking!

But not for long – because 1776 will soon grace the city of DC as a startup space just blocks from the White House! Keep your eyes peeled for news about this epic endeavor, and stay tuned for our involvement!

The finished product looks great and the darker color makes the gold accents stand out a lot more! Check out the before and after images:

{After!}

Here are some past O’Neill Studios painted furniture projects!

{The doors and the hutch have been treated with multi-layer, multi-colored distressed finish}

{Colorful French finishes}

{Hutch from a residential project, before}

{Hutch from a residential project, after}

When thinking about painted furniture, the first thing that comes to mind is wooden furniture because the possibilities are endless. If you have an unfinished wooden surface, there are so many opportunities to make something wild and awesome. Here’s an example of an Ikea dresser transformation:

{Plain Ikea dresser before}

{Two Ikea dressers after!}

Can you believe these are the same piece?! By adding a fresh coat of paint and gold details / hardware, these dressers make for amazing pieces of furniture. Also putting two of the dressers together was a great idea.
