Lincoln: Fall 2010-Winter 20111110 Vermont Ave. NW We began 2011 with one of our most ambitious, exciting, creative and BEAUTIFUL projects to date. The space is a ONE OF A KIND dynamic venue, from its handmade (by O’Neill Studios!) 2,000 square foot penny tile floor, to the custom 9-foot wingback chair, there is nothing common about this decor or the artists that designed and executed the space! The restaurant boasts a 400 mason jar installation a la Julian Schnabel, and a 52 foot hallway lined with 6 one-of-a-kind patina’d mirrors (you must see in person!). We are very proud of this project and encourage you to visit. |
Sax: Spring 2011734 11th St. NW After working with the creative and innovative owners of SEI and OYA we teamed up again to tackle their most ambitious project yet: Sax. THREE HUNDRED rolls of gold leaf cover the walls and architectural details including our custom handmade 10 foot medallion and exquisite David Yurman-inspired bar. We were also fortunate to team up with the brilliant Mario De Armas of Lamby Productions to execute a lavishly unique interior with 25 ft. ceilings and no windows- it is Vegas meets Parisian theatre. Sax is 9,700 square feet of pure decadence. If you are looking for an extravagant meal, amazing performances and THE MOST DRAMATIC INTERIOR, Sax is the place to be.

Irish Whiskey: Fall-Winter 20111207 19th St. NW
JUST OPENED! The owners of the Mighty Pint have opened the doors of their newest bar, Irish Whiskey Public House. Our goal was to put a fresh twist on the classic Irish bar. There are very few variations on this theme that are not “Disney world cheesy” or “dive bar orientated.” We took great pride in creating a new kind of Irish Pub that is less commercial and more thoughtful, contemporary and authentic, while still retaining the rustic charm of a traditional Irish pub.
Irish Whiskey Public House has a comprehensive selection of over sixty whiskies and is giving away a trip to Dublin for those who try all sixty. Who says you need bold colors and patterns to create a stimulating room? Using varying shades of subtle hues and custom finishes we created a unique identity for each piece of furniture in this home. Use your furniture to accessorize your room! From the stucco walls, to the strie cabinets, the perfect backdrop was created in this kitchen to accentuate fine provincial furnishings. In the same kitchen, cinnabar doors on the dish washing units and a Swedish hutch add even another layer of design. Continuing throughout the house we have a custom wine bar armoire in a feathery shade of blue, subtle strie on the master bathroom cabinets to make the tile sing, and an aged fireplace. Add all of these together and you get not only a beautiful home, but a one of a kind experience.

O’Neill Studios is thrilled to begin work on Irish Whiskey. This week we are focusing on staining the floor boards different shades of brown to create a multicolored hardwood floor. We are then sporadically stenciling a custom Irish Whiskey label on the floor. We will also be toning the trim to blend with the floor and applying a brass metallic paint to the walls which will then be treated with foil. Stay tuned for more in progress pictures this week!

The owners of the Mighty Pint have recently taken over the lease for the property at 1207 19th Street, NW (previously Porter’s Dining Saloon) and have hired O’Neill Studios to create a cosmopolotion public house. Renovations are under way and expected to open in October 2011. This will be a place for locals and regulars alike to sit and enjoy their whiskey or beer in a traditional pub setting! We are extremely excited by the challenge and task of helping to create a different kind of experience in a local Irish Pub. There are very few variations on this theme that are not generic “dive bar oriented”. We want to create a space that is less commercial and more thoughtful, contemporary and authentic with the use of traditional materials in unconventional ways. Stay tuned for more pictures!

Sax might be the only restaurant in Washington to list a choreographer on its payroll.
Like a little action with your yellowfin tuna? Beginning each night around 6:30, the newcomer to downtown accompanies dinner with performances by eight or so dancers who gyrate on a glass-front 20-foot “infinity” stage above the bar. The cabaret – ballet meets burlesque meets Cirque du Soleil – lets the owners take advantage of the cavernous space left behind by Posh but also “add more visuals to just dining,” says Nancy Koide, who co-owns Sax in addition to Oya and Sei, both in Penn Quarter.
Sax opened in May with a side of controversy: murals poking fun at official Washington, including one of a bare-chested Bill Clinton cavorting with a familiar-looking brunette in front of the Capitol. Within three weeks, the titillating scenes had been painted over. What remained was still an eye-opener dressed with reclaimed chandeliers, wrought iron, even a big church door. What’s not gold leaf is red velvet.
Factor in the ornate balcony seating and the cleavage-baring servers, and you could be in Las Vegas, Versailles, the Playboy Mansion.
The food comes as a surprise. Much of it is more refined than you might expect given everything that surrounds it. A bowl of corn soup arrives with icy islands of red pepper sorbet on its surface. Scallop carpaccio is set off with refreshing grapefruit, biting ginger and a froth of coconut milk. Deeply flavored, shredded braised lamb gets its crunch from red quinoa and sweetness from an apple sabayon. It should come as no surprise that the wine list in this over-the-top oasis tilts in favor of champagne.
Jonathan Seningen, who comes to this kitchen from Oya, knows he faces stiff competition in the dining room. “I have to draw people away from the show and the room and the servers – the eye candy,” says the chef, 33.
Good luck, sir.
As our waitress runs down the dessert choices, she purrs her preference for what amounts to a giant petit four: “My favorite is the Saxual chocolate cake.”

We are so excited to share with you our latest project, Hank’s Oyster Bar located in Dupont Circle at 1624 Q Street NW Washington DC! Our goal was to celebrate the existing comfort and classic quality of Hanks by choosing finishes to enhance the charm and dynamic architecture of the space. We worked with Owner Jamie Leeds to compose a refreshing, crisp palette. The interior architecture features a wonderful indoor/outdoor quality. We chose to complement the existing exposed brick and light woods by using high gloss lacquer textures, soft upholstery and crisp graphic patterns. The most unique and charming attribute of the new space is that the 1800 square foot addition has four distinct rooms that feature unique designs and upholstery. Hand painted walls add a unique touch to any room in your home including a nursery for your baby. It can also enlarge a space by drawing the viewer’s eye to the verticality of trees, or space between elements. This artwork is sure to keep any baby entertained and exposes your tiny tot to colors and designs!
